ABOUT SAM TURPIN
“THE MUSIC COMES FROM MY HEART. MY BEATS ARE EXPRESSIVE AND MY RHYMES ARE ABSTRACT BUT HONEST.”
Sam Turpin is an independent rapper and producer from Johannesburg, South Africa. Born in 1995 to anti-apartheid activist and photographer Gisèle Wulfsohn, Sam grew up in 21st Century post-apartheid Johannesburg. He was exposed to hip-hop at a very young age and began to experiment making beats during his high school
years. He was never serious, however, until his mother passed away from cancer in 2011. He soon began to use rap and music as a way to express his emotions and attempt to cope with loss. Overcoming depression through music, Sam released his first self-made music videos and short EPs online, to limited yet critical reception. After collaborating with several artists, local and international, he began performing at several local festivals. In 2017 Sam released his first full length mixtape “4am in Jozi” and continues to collaborate and perform. In 2019 He released 2 brand new singles, namely “Summer Evening” and “Sahara Flow”. In 2020 he brought us the latest, "Cloud City" featuring the amazing Lenny-Dee from Bye Beneco. He then collaborated with distinguished director Katya Abedian-Rawháni on their short film for his song "Sahara Flow" which premiered on Nataal Media. In early 2022, Turpin participated in the POST POST digital concert organised by Music in Africa and Tshepang Ramoba of the renowned BLK JKS and released his latest single "Broken Mirror", collaborating on the cover artwork with Japanese visual artist Keisuke Nakayama. Sam was then featured on The Charles Géne Suite's debut album "Suite Nites", appearing on two tracks. In mid 2022 Sam produced and starred in the short film and music video for “Whiskey Music” off The Charles Gene Suite album. In November 2022, Sam travelled to Cape Town to perform at two shows, Selective Live and The Lightning Bolt Festival. In January 2023, the Suite Nites album featuring Sam was released in Japan as an exclusive, deluxe physical edition through Paraphernalia Records and Disk Union. In September 2023, Sam released his latest project, the three track EP "Syncope" along with his self-directed visuals for the single "Moon Light". In October 2024 Sam travelled to Tokyo, Japan to perform at the Tour du Monde Event by NO VISA
